Field Day 2019

With the very unsettled weather we have been experiencing this year it was no surprise that the Friday afternoon/evening setup for FD19 had to be delayed. Both clubs gathered at the Port Williams site on Saturday morning and worked hard and steady to get everything setup and ready for the Field Day start time. A big THANKYOU! goes out to everyone who showed up and pitched in to make sure the stations were ready at start time.

We operated as a 3A setup this year with Kings County (KCARC) providing the CW and SSB stations and the Annapolis Valley (AVARC) providing the Digital, GOTA and VHF setups.

Of course, things did not go without some hick-cups which were to be expected. Our final submission was for 4050 points, down from last year (6448), but still considering the weather and very poor band conditions not a bad result.

We had over 1000 QSOs: 722 SSB, 119 CW, 99 digital (94 FT8 and 5 RTTY), 5 VHF SSB, 3 Satellite, and 54 GOTA station, mixed in there were 50 plus dupes, which we do not get credit for as they are “zero” point QSOs.

We earned a good number of the bonus points: 300 for setting up 3 stations, 100 points for each of the following: media support, setting up in a public location, VIP visitors, information booth, educational activity, safety officer, copying the FD message (at the Field Day site), using social media, sending a message from the site to our Section Manager, sending and receiving additional messages from the site, all thanks to the Annapolis Valley Group and using WINLINK (HF email service); and 50 points for submitting using the ARRL on-line service.

Also, a big thankyou to everyone who operated and to those who made the GOTA station QSOs. It all helps, and it takes a good number of dedicated folks to pull an event like this off.

We are already talking about FD20. One thing to note, we do need more helpers in all areas: setup, teardown, talking with visitors, and especially operators.
